Pricing method
How we price records.
Every value in Vinyl Portfolio is an estimate built from real marketplace data for your pressing and condition. Here is how it is made, and where its limits are.

What is the estimate based on?
On sales of the same pressing first. A record's value starts from what copies of that exact release actually sold for, not from what sellers are asking. Sales are the strongest evidence of what a buyer will pay.
How does condition change the value?
Each sale is adjusted to your copy's grade with a grade ladder measured from sales, not set by hand. Against a Near Mint copy at 100%:
| Grade | Price vs Near Mint |
|---|---|
| M Mint | |
| NM Near Mint | |
| VG+ Very Good Plus | |
| VG Very Good | |
| G+ Good Plus | |
| G Good |
For records pressed in 2015 or later we assume a sealed copy when no grade is given, because most recent pressings that sell are sold sealed: in our data, 68.8% of 2015-and-later sales are graded Mint.
Do asking prices count?
Yes, but for less. Listings and price suggestions help when a pressing rarely sells, and they are weighted below real sales. When the only evidence is a few low asks that do not fit the record, the app holds back a value rather than mark a collectible down to a likely mismatch.
How often are values updated?
Values are recalculated as new sales arrive, and every record is refreshed at least once a month. The app keeps the history, so your collection chart shows how values moved.
How accurate is it?
We measure it. Each pricing change is tested against later real sales before it ships, and we keep the change only when it moves estimates closer to what records then sold for. Even so, a value is an estimate, not an appraisal: a specific copy can sell above or below it, and rare records with few sales are the hardest to price.
What the app shows you
Each value is labeled by its evidence: sales-backed when it rests on real sales of the pressing, and pressing data when it rests on listings and suggestions. When there is not enough data, the record says so.
